The Plymouth Devils were down to five riders in their trip to Lakeside but they battled hard but in the end went down 55-35 .
No. 1 Steve Boxall ,who suffered back muscle problems two weeks ago and rode through the pain barrier on Friday night in the Devon Best Pairs, had to admit defeat to the injury and pulled out on Saturday morning. Team boss Laurence Rogers , driving from Cornwall up to Lakeside , was then busily trying to get a last minute guest but was unsuccessful with so many meetings on the same night and rider unavailability. Rider-Replacement was then his only option to cover Boxall’s rides.
Then in heat 2 Rob Parker was hit from behind on the first bend by home rider Connor Locke and was thrown from his machine landing on his head. He was then taken by ambulance to a local hospital for check up’s. The Devils reserve was concussed and will now automatically have a 9 day medical ban. He had CT scans at Basildon Hospital but after several hours discharged himself and returned home with his father.
Without Parker fellow reserve Callum Walker was a busy man taking seven rides in blistering heat . The Devils were still in with a shout of an away point at the half way stage but the home side powered ahead with the end scoreline not reflective of the effort the Devils put in to the clash. Rider Replacement for Boxall only produced 4 points which curtailed the scoring and had the No. 1 been present the end result would have been much closer.”
Team boss Rogers though was proud of his riders,” the lads gave it their all. Down to five riders is never easy and we missed Steve’s scoring at the top end. Credit to them all for battling hard on a blistering hot night . Having their rides come so close together there was little time to make adjustments to the bikes but the mechanics worked overtime and the team spirit in the whole camp was very evident with everyone chipping in to help each other. We are a team and that showed . After the meeting we all relaxed and had a cold drink together and spirits were still high despite the loss and the injury to Rob . We win together and lose together and the team spirit in our camp is second to none.”
“ I need to get my planning head on now to see who we can bring in for Rob and line guests up for Swindon away Thursday and home Friday in case Steve is not fit. He is seeing a sports injury therapist this week and getting more treatment.”LAKESIDE 55: Zach Wajtknecht 15, Ben Morley 13+2, Paul Hurry 11, Alfie Bowtell 8+3, Nick Laurence 4, Connor Locke 2+1, Jamie Couzins 2.
