Compton And Atkins Take Best Pairs

Compton And Atkins Take Best Pairs

Devils skipper Benji Compton combined with young gun Henry Atkins to win the Devon Best Pairs on Friday night at Plymouth. The duo displayed some excellent team riding throughout the meeting to take the title by a solitary point at the end from Luke Priest and Shane Hazelden.

It all came down to a showdown in the penultimate race between Compton and Atkins in competition with team mates Steve Boxall and Richard Andrews. Mathematically a first and second for the latter pair would have given them a run off with Priest and Hazelden for the title. Compton and Atkins knew that a second and third would give then 5 points based in the scoring system used of 4,3,2,0.

Nerves were jittering at the start gate as Andrews touched the tapes and was penalised 15 metres handicap. He battled hard but could not get past the team riding duo . Boxall defied the pain barrier with his back muscle problem but was clearly not finding riding easy and could be a doubt for the Devils Saturday night visit to Lakeside.

Co-Promoter Laurence Rogers was pleased at how things went, “ There was some good racing and as predicted no one were firm favourites. All in all things went well . It was a good work out for all the team and for Shane Hazelden making his competitive track return after almost a year out of action and hopefully he will get snapped up somewhere soon.”
