The Plymouth Devils made hard work of the first half of this clash with the National League Select with the scorelines at 25-23 after eight heats but went into top form mode in the final part of the meeting notching five maximum 5-1 heat wins.
Henry Atkins and skipper Benji Compton on a bike borrowed off tea mate Rob Parker started the slide to victory in heat 9 followed up by a brilliant ride from Richard Andrews in heat 10 as he chased and rounded in one big outside swoop the Select paring of Matt Bates and Chris Widman to join Steve Boxall for maximum points.
The Select fought back with a 4-2 in heat 11 as new signing Adam Roynon suffered his only defeat of the night at the hands of Ben Wilson. Atkins and Compton then combined again to produce another 5-1 before Boxall and Roynon combined for the first of two maximum points wins in heats 13 and 15.
16 year old Atkins again top scored with 16 paid 17 which would have been paid 20 but for losing his steel shoe in heat 8 as he spectacularly kept control of his bike as it headed to the fence when on a 5-1 with Andrews.Team manager Laurence Rogers was well pleased with the performance, “ The Select pushed us hard early on although that was helped by two bike failures for Benji which was found to be a spark plug problem. But all in all it was a good work out for the lads with Adam Roynon showing what a force he will be especially as he hasn’t ridden for about a month! Onwards and upwards for the Devils from here on in I think!”
