The 2017 fixture list has not been kind on the Plymouth Devils with three home league matches pitting them against three of the top sides in the division and it doesn’t come any harder than the reigning league champions Birmingham.
The Brummies have been champions the past two seasons and going for a hat trick this season. Following on visits from Eastbourne and Cradley the Devils couldn’t have had a tougher start to the campaign but will be looking to get amongst the points on Friday.
They lost heat leader Danyon Hume for the season with a badly broken arm recently but have stepped in to sign Berwick’s Liam Carr ---who was at Coventry under Laurence Rogers last year. He gives the Midlanders a strong spearhead with Tom Bacon , who doubles up in the Premiership with Peterborough this year.
They have emerging talent Jack Parkinson-Blackburn, who also races in the Premiership for Sheffield and the teenager is scoring points for dun this year and will give the Devils a tough time.
Skippering the side is Darryl Ritchings, in his second season in Birmingham colours and another ex-Coventry Storm rider who actually made his debut a few days after his 15th birthday at Newport under Laurence Rogers.
At reserve Layne Cupitt, brother-in-law of Tai Woffinden, has been scoring freely and gives the Brummies a strong tail end .
The Devils have two meetings in as many days with a National Trophy clash at Swindon on the Thursday before the league clash with Birmingham.
Co-Promoter Mark Phillips commented, “ We face another tough one Friday but if the racing is just as good as last week then I am sure everyone will go away happy. The lads are looking to get some league points on the board and a few of them took advantage of getting some laps and practice in at the training school last week. Steve’s hand is getting better and he has had his motor away for service whilst Benji’s knee will be strapped up and he will be giving it his all. It should be another great night’s racing I am sure.”
